Resident Evil 4 Pc Game Tpb: How to Play the VR Version on PC

The Ultimate HD Edition of Resident Evil 4 was developed in response to the poor quality of the initial 2007 PC port from Sourcenext. This port was based off the 2011 HD version of the game on Xbox 360 developed by AQ Interactive, which in turn was based off the 2007 Wii edition with the extra content from the PlayStation 2 port.[1] It also features alternative color filter options, some improved HD textures, keyboard and mouse support, and the ability to play the game at 60 or 30 FPS. The game, however, is originally designed around a 30 FPS cap, and various issues, both minor and major, can occur when playing at 60 FPS; see Issues unresolved for details. Mouse controls are also a hit-or-miss; some players reported the mouse aiming worked fine while others experience issues such as slow mouse movement and unresponsiveness, possibly to the extent of being unplayable.[2][3][4] A controller is recommended in situations where mouse controls are not playable. Unfortunately, the low-quality PlayStation 2 FMV sequences are also carried over in the Separate Ways campaign and a few other scenarios in this port.[5] There were some other issues initially with this port, but some of them have been addressed with patches.[6][7]

There is a modding community for this version of Resident Evil 4 after moving from modding the previous 2007 PC port. One of the most ambitious projects available is the Resident Evil 4 HD Project, which completely revise the game's models, textures, environments, lighting, effects, and FMVs. re4_tweaks also aims to fix and restore other small features of the game.

For now, this version of Resident Evil 4 only works on Oculus Quest hardware, not on Windows PCs or PlayStation 4's VR mode. Capcom seems to love locking VR versions of its horror games to specific platforms, as the groundbreaking VR mode in 2017's Resident Evil 7 remains exclusive to PlayStation VR. (Seriously, Capcom? Five years later, and you still haven't ported that wonderful game to a more powerful VR system?)

Officially, Facebook limits this week's port even further, as the company only sells the game for its newer Quest 2 platform. If you own only the original 2019 Oculus Quest, you won't find RE4 in any of its native store menus. After I began testing the game's Quest 2 version, I immediately wondered: This restriction can't be technical, can it? The answer came from the game's Quest 1-level specs, particularly its 72 fps frame rate cap and lower-resolution textures. Was this a case of the more powerful Quest 2 requiring some visual downgrades to smoothly run a port of a 2005 GameCube game?

My hopes for law-abiding Quest 1 owners to get access to the game began with a guide from the Oculus Quest Reddit community promising "RE4 on your Quest 1 without piracy." The process required a few funky steps. First, by using a Chrome extension, I could log in to my Oculus account to download each of the required files I would need to boot RE4VR on the Quest, all digitally signed with my own account details. Then I enabled "developer mode" on my Quest headset. This allowed me to upload those files via a Windows PC to either a Quest 1 or Quest 2 headset. The community-developed Sidequest app remains the easiest way to do so, though I still had to manually place "APK" and "OBB" files in proper directories.

Unfortunately, after following all those steps, my digitally signed version of RE4VR wasn't digitally signed enough for Quest 1 hardware. The game began to boot just as it does on Quest 2, only to quit itself after displaying a stern warning: "Failed to confirm entitlement, game will now exit."

After asking around, I got a chance to personally test and verify that this week's port of RE4VR indeed boots on Quest 1 systems. What's more, the game runs at an apparently locked 72 fps, albeit with a slightly downgraded image resolution. I couldn't budge the frame rate in my tests while jumping between various save files, whether in the game's first busy, villager-filled shootout or later battles like the harrowing showdown against a lake monster. When asked how they got this version running on Quest 1, my source pointed to a Sidequest upload of "certain" files to their Quest 1, then winked.

This process also requires toggling developer mode on your Oculus account and connecting Quest hardware to a Windows PC. Sidequest streamlines a few "ADB" console commands that you can send to either Quest system, and the Quest 2 can be forced to render games at preferred frame rates and texture resolutions, which can sometimes result in laggy performance, bugs, or outright crashes. In RE4VR's case, jumping up from 72 Hz to 90 Hz and slightly higher texture resolutions works without a hitch.

For the last year modder Mr. Curious has been posting about the Resident Evil Remix project (opens in new tab), in which he recreates the original Resident Evil's Spencer Mansion in the engine of Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition. Now it's almost ready for release he's made the game available to YouTuber Residence of Evil for a playtest.

It's great seeing those locations and characters from an over-the-shoulder perspective. Some item locations have been changed too, so you won't automatically know where every single key is even if you've finished the original 100 times. You'll have to go around smashing boxes and pot plants with your knife, as well as shooting down objects from high locations, then popping them in the suitcase inventory system from RE4. Fortunately quest items, like ink ribbons for saving your game at typewriters, don't take up space that you could be using for spare herbs. There are RE4-style weapon upgrades too.

Fans are also working on Resident Evil 4 HD Project (opens in new tab), while rumor has it Capcom have their own Resident Evil 4 Remake in the works (opens in new tab), although not everyone thinks it needs one (opens in new tab). And if you're looking to fill out the rest of your classic survival horror game experience, some fans whipped up a great Dino Crisis patch (opens in new tab) that brings the old PC port up to date with all sorts of quality of life updates and new features.

To use this plugin, copy all files into your Biohazard/Resident Evil 4 installation directory. Then just launch "loader.exe", configure the settings (optional) and click "load game" to start the game.

This will mark the first instance of Capcom remaking an older game for next-generation consoles, which should mean an immediate improvement in visual fidelity. Therefore, we can expect better graphics than ever before. Even better than Resident Evil Village.

Halo for the PC has been updated once again with the fairly important-sounding 1.031 update fixing "the crash on startup bug relating to the intro movies", as well as turning off anisotropic filtering by default and invalidating all your save games. Don't worry about the latter part though, because it's only your checkpoints that are reset - any levels you've actually unlocked should still be available to you.
