Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (abbreviated JTHM) is the first comic book by Jhonen Vasquez. A black comedy, and comedy horror, the series tells the story of a fictional serial killer named Johnny C. as he explores the psychological and possibly supernatural forces which compel him to commit a string of murders. In the 1990s, Johnny began as a comic strip, then ran under alternative comics publisher Slave Labor Graphics as a limited series of seven issues.
One of the characters introduced in the JTHM series of comics is Squee. Squee (whose real name is Todd, I think) is the young boy who lives next store to Johnny. Squee is one of the few people who Johnny actually kind of likes. He tries to teach him about the sick world that Johnny is both a product and cause of. It isfrom this perspective that Jhonen Vasquez writes from in his second comic, a four-issue series called Squee. This series, along with Jhonen's usual tangents, details the life of Squee in this rough and tumble world. Unfortunately, Squee, except for the companionship of his stuffed bear Shmee, has little guidance (even from hisparents) for life in world. To put it simply, Squee is about this poor kid in a cruel, cruel world.

This is one of my favorite shops in the Valley. The staff are a lot of fun and have never pressured me to buy. They genuinely seem to love comics. Pre-COVID they'd host some awesome signings -- always free, too. Now they have it where you can purchase books in advanced, and, if the artist or writer are local, they'll have them signed at no additional cost. Could not recommend it more.
Excellent shop! They were so welcoming on my first visit and provided suggestions and recommendations. Plus the shop pup is a total cutie. I'm so grateful that they are open during quarantine and that I am able to buy new comics during this time. Pro tip- join their rewards system to get discounts on later purchases.
It started as a series of comics in the magazine Carpe Noctem, and later spawned a seven-book series, later compiled and reprinted as JtHM: The Director's Cut. Related spin-offs included Squee, a four-book series which later was also collected and reprinted with filler from all eleven books in a separate section; I Feel Sick, which starred Johnny's ex-girlfriend and almost-victim Devi; and Fillerbunny, a deliberately half-assed trio of books spun off from some Squee filler.
When compared to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, the Squee story is a little tame. I know, for the rest of the world Squee is probably one of the most fucked up comics ever but we fans of JV know that Johnny easily takes that prize.
Now personally I look at Squee as more of a companion to the Johnny collection. Johnny makes an occasional appearance but without having read those comics I think that Squee is a bit of a lackluster collection on its own.
To be sure, there were/are other maniac comics out there with homicidal types as the main character / anti-hero: Some that came before JTHM. But they coughed and sputtered or just sank from their own bullshit.
